Boo the Dog Plush, Books, and Collectibles

Looking for a Boo the Dog plush? There is exactly one official one: the Gund “World’s Cutest Dog” line, made under license while Boo was alive and still sold new at Amazon and toy retailers today. Boo has been gone since 2019, and the stuffed animal is how most fans keep him on a shelf. This guide lists every Gund Boo design we can verify, by size, plus the three books and the retired pieces that have quietly become collectibles.

One rule we follow on this page: official items only. Gund holds the license for Boo plush toys, and the books were written by Boo’s owner. A real Gund Boo has the Gund tag and embroidered detailing; a “Boo” plush without them is a knockoff.

The Gund Boo plush line, by size

Gund has made more than 30 Boo designs over the years, mostly in two sizes: the full-size 9-inch Boo, and the 5-inch “Itty Bitty Boo” minis, which are numbered and were sold in themed outfits. Designs rotate in and out, so the table says where each one turns up rather than quoting a price that will be wrong by next month.

Design Size Line Where it turns up
Classic sitting Boo 9 in full-size Amazon, Walmart, Michaels. The one that actually looks like him
Unicorn Boo (multicolor mane, sparkly horn and ears) 9 in full-size Amazon, Walmart
Santa Hat Boo 9 in full-size, holiday resale listings
Tie-Dye Hoodie Boo (removable hoodie with ear details) 9 in full-size toy retailers
Winter Hat and Sweater Boo not listed full-size, winter Amazon
Rainbow Hoodie Boo 9 in full-size marketplace listings
Reindeer Antlers Boo not listed holiday, launched 2014 mostly resale
Itty Bitty Boo #19, bow tie and boxers 5 in Itty Bitty, launched 2014 mostly resale
Itty Bitty Boo #20, backpack with his name embroidered 5 in Itty Bitty, launched 2014 mostly resale
Itty Bitty Boo clip-on (for backpacks and belt loops) 5 in Itty Bitty, launched 2014 mostly resale
Itty Bitty Boo #43, Easter bunny hood 5 in Itty Bitty Amazon
Itty Bitty Boo #44, pink unicorn hoodie 5 in Itty Bitty Walmart, toy retailers
Itty Bitty Boo ladybug, strawberry, and alien costumes 5 in Itty Bitty resale listings

If you only want one, get the classic 9-inch: the costume versions are fun, but the plain sitting Boo is the one with his face right. The wider Gund Boo selection on Amazon usually carries most of what is currently sold new.

The books

Boo’s owner wrote three photo books under the pen name J.H. Lee, all published by Chronicle Books and all still easy to find new or used:

  1. Boo: The Life of the World’s Cutest Dog (2011). The original, eventually published in 10 languages. If you only get one, get this one.
  2. Boo: Little Dog in the Big City (2012). Boo out and about in San Francisco with Buddy and his friends.
  3. Boo ABC: A to Z with the World’s Cutest Dog (2013). The alphabet book for the youngest fans; the full J.H. Lee shelf on Amazon has whatever is currently in print.

The collector’s market

Here is something nobody tells you: retired Boo merchandise has a real secondhand market. Since Gund cycles designs out of production and no new Boo photos will ever exist, the discontinued pieces are finite, and fans have noticed.

What collectors look for on eBay and similar markets:

  • Retired costume plushes (the holiday editions, the 2014 reindeer antlers) in new-with-tags condition
  • The numbered Itty Bitty series, especially the 2014 numbers like the bow-tie-and-boxers and backpack Boos
  • First-edition hardcovers of the 2011 book
  • Sealed copies of the annual Boo calendars

The honest way to price a piece is the same on eBay as anywhere: check SOLD listings, not asking prices, because sellers can ask for anything and the sold history is what collectors actually paid.

Condition rules everything. A loved, fur-matted Boo plush is a wonderful thing to own but worth little; sealed and tagged examples are what collectors pay for.

A note on what this page is

This site has been a Boo fan site since his early days. We keep this guide updated because fans still ask where to find him, and because a plush Boo on a shelf is a pretty good way to remember the dog who started it all. If what you actually want is a plush of your OWN dog, that exists too, and it is wonderful, and the other internet-famous dogs have their own official plush. If you are new here, his full story is on the bio page, and the photo gallery is where the cuteness lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Boo the Dog plush still made?

New ones are still sold. The classic 9-inch sitting Boo and the 9-inch Unicorn Boo are the easiest to find new at Amazon and toy retailers; the costume and holiday versions rotate, and the 2014 Itty Bitty designs mostly turn up on resale sites now. Gund’s own website no longer lists the line.

Which Boo the Dog plush is the real one?

Only Gund makes licensed Boo plush. A real one has the Gund tag and embroidered details. The 9-inch sitting Boo is the lifelike one; everything else in the line is the same Boo in an outfit.

How much is a retired Boo plush worth?

It depends on condition more than design. Sealed, tagged examples of retired holiday and Itty Bitty designs sell for the most; a played-with one is worth little. Price a piece from eBay’s sold listings, not from what sellers are asking.
